Download iCal FileWe live and work within a machine that makes us unwell while not allowing us to be unwell and punishes us for being unwell and asks us to punish others for being unwell so that we can prove we are well. This talk explores the imperative of wellness in the academy and the shapes it takes, for students as well as faculty, especially in narratives of meritocracy. We conflate wellness and success, unwellness and failure, achievement and our worth. Instead, what if we allowed ourselves--and others--to be unwell? This talk explores what it looks like to be unwell, to allow unwellness, and to teach--and learn--through a pedagogy of unwellness. Participants will reflect on their own mental health and relationships to the academy.
This event is on the ground floor and wheelchair-accessible, and CART (Live Event Captioning) will be provided. We also seek to maintain a fragrance-free space and ask that our attendees refrain from wearing perfume, cologne, essential oils or other fragranced products. The space has fluorescent lighting, and these lights will either be turned off or, in the case more light is needed, only half of the room will be lit with fluorescent lights. To request accommodations, please contact the Disability Cultural Center at dcc@uic.edu or 312-355-7050. Refreshments will be served.
This event is part of Asian American Awareness Month, and is sponsored by the Asian American Resource and Cultural Center, the Disability Cultural Center, the Chancellor's Committee on the Status of Persons with Disabilities, the Office of Access and Equity, and the Global Asian Studies Program.
