The State of Student Mental Health at UIC: Storytelling for Disability Justice
The State of Student Mental Health at UIC report is based on focus group and interview research conducted in the 2024 Spring and Fall semesters by Dr. Nicole Nguyen, Professor of Criminology, Law, and Justice and Dr. Nico Darcangelo, Associate Director of the Disability Cultural Center. The research centers students experiences with mental health while at UIC by using a storytelling prompt that included an individual interactive map making component to initiate the storytelling process. This research also draws on other already-existing data held by the Office of Student Affairs (e.g., data on student utilization for counseling and outreach services reported by the Counseling Center) to provide the most complete picture of student mental health at UIC.
