ASL Chat
December 3, 2024
4:00 PM - 5:00 PM
Join UIC DCC for a “voices off” ASL get-together. We can use this time to introduce ourselves, share what's going on for us, and dig into some Deaf culture tidbits–all in sign.
This chat is hosted by DCC Director Margaret Fink (she/her), who identifies as deaf or Hard of Hearing and learned ASL later in life. You don’t have to be fluent to join: learners are welcome and we can help one another with vocab! With that said, this gathering is not intended as an ASL "lessons" series--instead, it’s a friendly, non-judgmental space for using (and practicing) ASL.
As with most of our events, students, faculty, staff, and community members are welcome to join.
For the time being, this is an in-person series. If you would be interested in a Zoom version of this space, please email us to let us know (dcc@uic.edu)!
Covid safety information:
UIC does not require masking, but we are continuing to mask indoors as an accessibility measure for sick/immunocompromised folks and those living interdependently with them. We ask that everyone wear a mask in our spaces. Because ASL relies on expressions for meaning, we will have clear masks available. If you prefer wearing KN95 or N95 (or some other type) please continue to do so. Also, if masking conflicts with your access needs, we welcome you into our spaces-- we are masking for your safety, too.
Access information:
This gathering uses American Sign Language for communication. We recommend knowing how to fingerspell in order to check in about particular signs.
The DCC is located on the 2nd floor and is accessible via elevator. We use fragrance free cleaning supplies in our center, but UIC is not a fragrance free campus. Please skip the cologne or perfume to make this a fragrance reduced environment.
Contact dcc@uic.edu or 312-355-7050 with any questions or requests!
