Join DCC for an end-of-year celebration on Cinco de Mayo with Spanish rock band Raro! We’ll also hear from the Rios Trio, who will open for Raro.
Lead singer Stephanie Alma incorporates her perspective as a Mexican-American disabled woman into her songwriting and performance. She's joined by bandmates Tommy Carroll (drums), DC (Bass), and Marcos Rios (guitar).
All are welcome. If you’re graduating, come through for a token of our appreciation. We'll have cupcakes and refreshments!
Covid safety: This event will be held primarily outdoors, and food will be served outdoors. If you will be using the indoor space at the Latino Cultural Center, please wear a mask when you are not eating. While eating, please socially distance from others.
Access info: ASL interpretation & CART live captions provided. CART captioning will be remote, with captions made available via link or QR code to access on your device. The event will be held outdoors with indoor space available at the Latino Cultural Center (Lecture Center B). We will be serving cupcakes and drinks with gluten free, vegan, and nut-free options. If you’d like to eat at a table, some are available around the quad, or inside the LCC. For any other access questions or requests, contact DCC at dcc@uic.edu!
About Stephanie Alma
Stephanie Alma is a self-taught singer, songwriter, and producer born and raised in Chicago. She leads the Spanish rock band Raro, and participates in various improvised music projects. Stephanie identifies as a Mexican American, disabled, woman who interprets cycles of grief and healing, life and death, emotions, and emptiness through sound. She is interested in the sounds of disability identity and self-awareness through formal and informal vocal expression. Her vocal melodies reflect her deep connection to Mexican music and R&B/Jazz. Feelings of empowerment and rejuvenation surround her lyric writing.
Stephanie is a UIC alum and earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and Disability and Human Development in 2018. She was also the very first undergrad worker at the UIC Disability Cultural Center, where she explored disability culture and met with other disabled artists and educators who have influenced her work. In 2022, she was a 3Arts/Bodies of Work Residency Fellow.
